Our 2024 History Exposition

Join us on the grounds of the Fort Wallace Museum to experience history first-hand. This year’s theme “The Moccasin Speaks – the Journey of the German Family” touches on the story of a family immigrating from Georgia to Colorado who had a tragic encounter with the Cheyenne in present-day Logan County in 1874, 150 years ago, We explore the story of the pioneers, why and how they made their westward journey, as well as the Native Tribes who once called this area home.

We again make use of history stations and will host 1000 area school children on Friday. Our stations include building with sod, supplies for traveling, how to pack a wagon, the use of oxen, baking bread and making butter, chuckwagon cooking, the military and the Red River War, the story of Cheyenne woman Mochi, the story of Lydia German, Scouts and Buffalo Hunters, Colorado gold prospecting (the lure for many travelers), and lifestyle of Native people.

Food may be purchased on the grounds with Smoky Hill BBQ and Los Tacos Gordos Food Trucks.

This event is free to the public, thanks to our generous sponsors, including the Dane G Hansen Foundation, the Wallace County Foundation, the Pete Henry Foundation, and the Friends of the Cottonwood Ranch.
